Jalapão

Its name comes from a common plant in the region: the herb jalapa from Brazil and is situated in the State of tocantins, Central-West Brazil. Away from it all, became one of the preferred destinations for travelers who love outdoor sports. Between caves, waterfalls, dunes and rivers the jalapão offers numerous attractions for the traveler.

It is believed that there are 350 million years ago the jalapão was the bottom of an ocean. This belief is given due to the shape of existing relief and the presence of dunes and lots of sand in the middle of Brazil. Relief of jalapão remember the landscape of large deserts. Formed by plateaus and canyons of sedimentary origin, this is one of the more exotic Brazilian landscapes, in addition to being diversified with webs of rivers, creeks and streams, waterfalls, lagoons, sand dunes, mountains and plateaus.

Despite being known as desert of jalapão, with orange dunes and vegetation typical of the cerrado, the region is considered a vital fresh water tank. In the region you can find typical of the cerrado species such as the giant anteater, pampas deer, capybara, ema and the Jaguar. Pairs of macaws, toucans and many other birds help to compose the scene.

To preserve the site, some protected areas have been created, such as the ecological station of the serra geral do tocantins, one of the most important areas of the cerrado, in addition to form an ecological corridor with the springs of parnaíba National Park, with the environmental protection areas (apas) of serra da tabatinga and of jalapão and with the jalapão totaling 160 1000 hectares of native vegetation.

In relation to the climate, there are two clearly defined periods in jalapão: the rainy season (October to April) and dry (May to September). The best time to visit is the drought, because the roads are in better condition and the waters of the new river are lower, facilitating the practice of rafting. The average temperature is 30° c.But come prepared. the place has almost no infrastructure to receive visitors and is one of the regions with the lowest population density in the country. A good choice is the Wild camping, for the more adventurous. Get ready also to face long distances, usually traveled on a dirt road in a car 4 × 4, and “swallow” a lot of dust.

Jalapão covers the municipalities of Ponte Alta do Tocantins, Mateiros, São Félix do Jalapão, novo acordo and aparecida do rio novo. High bridge is considered the gateway to the desert and the last place where the adventurous can buy fuel, food and water, in addition to hiring guides. We highly recommend hiring a guide for exploration in the region, because the paths are many and confusing.

In the municipality of Mateiros are two jewels of Jalapão: Fervedouro and Cachoeira do Formiga. This impresses with transparency and the blue coloration of the water which rises to hundreds of metres above the small waterfall in a backwater where you can bathe the fervedouro is a surprise for travelers, an eye of water forms a natural swimming pool with eight meters in diameter and bluish water bubbling on the white sand and very fine covering the bottom. No matter how hard you try, it’s impossible to sink due to water pressure, which ensures more fun of jalapão because it looks like he’s floating the whole time.

On the road to there are some interesting scripts mateiros. At km 15 is Suçuapara cave, 15 m high and 60 m long that forms a canyon with waterfalls. the dunes appear at km 136 of the road and arrive to reach 40 meters in height. Already on the road to São Félix do Jalapão, less than 10 km after Fervedouro, you can enjoy the water a greenish color and transparent io Ant waterfall, perfect for a shower.

Jalapão is this: an unforgettable diving in the transparent waters of cachoeira do rio Formiga, floating in the waters of Fervedouro bubble, meet the history and craftsmanship of Golden grass of the community of mumbucas, former slaves fleeing from bahia, and see the rivers of the region and the beautiful landscape of dunes.
