Last week met at the invitation of Garmin, about 50 journalists and bloggers on the Costa Brava to the Garmin GPS experience. I also had the opportunity on the Spanish coast to travel and to test the complete product range of Garmin for cycling, running, trail running, geocaching, and golf under practical conditions. Were also top athletes such as David Millar, Jack Bauer and the trail of Caleb fairly by the Garmin Pro Cycling Team, the Ultra Runner Jez Bragg, brothers Sébastien and Sylvain Camus.
On the day of arrival I could see already again Marcel at the dinner by Ausgeruestet.com , as well as the colleagues from Pocketnavigation.de, Dosenfischer.de, Naviso.de and Ksmichel.de get to know and first interesting conversations. Also the team by Garmin Germany was already on the ground and had to stand equal to answer to their product range.
After a morning press conference the following day, where Garmin’s latest GPS were presented devices, as well as the program of the GPS experience, we could test for two days the wide range of hand tools, bicycle computer, forerunner GPS watches and golf in practice.
In a small country under the Spanish Sun , we could take the entire forerunner series (10, 110, 210, 610 and 910) under the microscope. When I had started last year with the workout, I decided for the forerunner 410 and against the 610 due to corrosion problems at the back of this model. Meanwhile Garmin has improved however after (plastic instead of metal cover) and so I decided the 610 and the touch screen to test function. In short, a handy GPS and heart rate monitor in a robust case with simple touch controls and all the functions the a runner needs.
That Garmin has a golf watch in the range was known to me, why do golfers however need GPS was absolutely unclear to me. The approach series watch runs also a handheld device called approach G6 which is handy inside the current edge series square next to the S3. On the square of the Golf Platja de Pals right next to our hotel, we could test the parts in the appropriate environment. Of course, we played without handicap yourself on the sacred grass (for this we were able to plow the driving range), but had to follow the experienced golf teachers in the square.
The GPS approach series devices come with more than 30,000 pre-loaded golf courses of all over the world (in the case of the G6 including cards) and can for life free to be updated with the latest courses. You can read off the distance from the current position to the next green at a glance, provides information about the current track and receives even a detailed map of the railways in the G6. In short, the approach is an absolute enrichment for ambitious golfers.
GARMIN TRAIL RUNNING / TREKKING / GEOCACHING
When a small trail running round along with Sébastien Camus along Spain’s rocky coast, I could place fēnix with its extensive features, yet hand at the brand new Oregon 600 in addition to the Garmin. While running I mouth but more with Sébastien for me the fēnix to deal with. Next to me, only Christian of the Garmin team wanted to run with all other preferred the more intimate walk over the same (short) distance. Maybe I’m again later for a more detailed test send the watch me.
I could take even closer, the Oregon 600 at a short Geocaching round on the day of departure compared with my old Oregon 200, under the magnifying glass. One great development is really the touch screens now, as for almost all smartphones today, capacitive and Multitouch is capable. The display can be operated liquid (probably even when wearing gloves) and is still well under the baking Sun of Spain. The question remains how robust and scratch-proof’s in the hard outdoor use really is. Other nice features include the unlimited number of geocaches are now stored the Bluetooth can be, interface, as well as the GLONASS compatibility.
On the road we were accompanied by the professionals of the Garmin Pro cycling team, the current devices of edge series test, the edge 510 and 810. Both models feature online functions (by tethering a Smartphone) as live tracking, send/receive routes, and share via social media. On the handy devices, you can also displayed a myriad data such as distance, speed, altitude, heart rate, speed / Cadence or power. The data fields and whose number can be customized it. In addition, you can set the profiles for various cycling activities.
Because I drove wheel maybe 3 times in the last 10 years, I had in practice more the road concentrate on 10,000 euros and to be careful that I drive around any of the professionals that I really apart could sit down while driving with the edge. The ActiveRouting function on a readable map of the edge of 810 worked very well. In short, the edge series provides for ambitious cyclists excellent bike computer. For the hobby cyclist, a cheaper version with fewer features and map display with ActiveRouting would be surely interesting.
GARMIN ON THE WATER
Garmin is represented also in the maritime sector. Therefore, another ride was on a large sailing ship along the Costa Brava on the program at the end of our stay. Garmin offers everything you need on the water navigation and communications, about depth finders and instruments, maps, and a special Marine GPS watch (fēnix-based).
This would be certainly an interesting device on Android based, pages of Garmin’s there but unfortunately no official confirmation for such a product.
Further, the colleagues of Pocketnavigation.de have found still references to a GPS camera named Virb . But here, too, there is no official confirmation.
The GPS experience offered me an excellent opportunity to test the full current range (up on the road and flight navigation) on Garmin devices in practice once. So I could determine that for example a GPS golf watch definitely has its raison d ‘ être and cycling computer can measure today far more than just the current speed and the distance traveled (and also still completely wirelessly).
Of course not too short was also the “networks” at the GPS experience. So I was pleased the team by Garmin Germany (and also some international Garmin employees), as well as to meet some bloggers colleagues and journalists personally.
Yet once a thanks to Garmin for the invitation and the great event on the Costa Brava from here!
