Chapada Diamantina is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful national parks. Located in the State of Bahia, has a diverse landscape, with excerpts of Cerrado, Atlantic forest, Caatinga and beautiful high-altitude grassland, including waterfalls, rivers and waterholes.
One of the best known walks within the Park is the crossing Sheets-Andaraí, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful climbers from Brazil. Are approximately 70 km of trail that attracts people from all over the country, and even from abroad. The script can take three to five days, depending on the mood and the chosen path. By its distance and complexity, we recommend the accompaniment of a local guide or an undertaking of ecotourism. Even because there are different alternatives of trails and overnight in this way. The best-known excerpts will be described below, to give an idea of how lovely this crossing that runs through the heart of the Chapada Diamantina.
The historic town of Lençóis is the starting point. Followed by steep mountains paths of water and Ribeirão, accompanies the course of the River, between canyons and open valleys. This trail was opened in the 19th century by prospectors from diamond to facilitate the city’s supply of sheets, with products from the Vale do Capão.
The Valley of the River, in the median of the trail, was the scene of several miners, whose traces can be conferred by those who make this walk. One of the highlights of this first excerpt, from Sheets to the Vale do Capão, are the campinas where the Wick (Mount Tabor-1480 metres), a place of rare beauty. From this point the route follows South for 12 km more in the direction of Capon, totaling some 23 km on this first day. An average of 8 hours of walking relatively light and without much difference. Those who don’t have much time available can do only this first stretch of the crossing.
Arriving at the village of Capon, it’s worth making a diversion until the cachoeira da Fumaça, considered one of the largest in the country. The vision of access to the track until the smoke is a winding path, scratched in a hillside vegetation cover. Through this track a lot of ascent, which takes around 1 hour to be travelled, to where the waterfall plunges its 340 meters waterfall. By their height and little water she almost goes up in smoke before touching the ground.
An alternative that also part of Sheets is to make the walk known as “Smoke underneath”, arriving at the foot of the waterfall and passes through beautiful places. To continue the route to return to the village of Capon. To cross it arrive at the village pump, where starts a long ascent towards the Gerais do Vieira. The beautiful look of Morro Branco and Wick compensates for the effort. The “General” are, in fact, a wide plain of undulating relief, thin and low vegetation dominated by grasses and plants typical of the campos rupestres, of which the evergreens stand out. Up the hill from the Gaucho takes between 4 and 5 hours.
To cut the Viera General there are several trails, permeated by Wells and cachoeirinhas, with a look that dazzles any tourist. Camping in the middle of is a good alternative for anyone who follows the Valley of the Pati.
Toward the Morro Branco of Pati, you arrive to the well-known “dirt road” or “little church”, where you can stay overnight at the end of the day, after a total of approximately 9 hours of walking, on this second day. The place has that name because during the diamond cycle, there was a village, compulsory passage prospectors and slaves who worked in the region. Today, the only remaining reminder of the old village is a small church, in ruins, still with its altar and saints and an old Bible in Latin. Several locals have turned their homes into small inns (like for example your Wilson, Edward and His Massú), where it is possible, in addition to hosting, buy some fruit and vegetables.
Pati Valley it follows towards the “City Hall”, in fact, a little house in the middle of nowhere, with no doors or Windows, where cattlemen and burreiros in the region stop for a rest before you go up the trail, path that leads to Andaraí. From City Hall to the Cachoeirão it takes a few more 3 hours.
The Cachoeirão is a Valley adjacent to the Pati Valley that ends in a majestic seawall which plummet several waterfalls from a height of 200 metres. To reach Andaraí is necessary, then, to confront the “Slope of the Empire”, steep climb with more than 400 metres of unevenness, sidewalk, which offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Chapada. In the “settled”, top of the ladder, begins the descent to Andaraí zigzag that meanders without much difficulty, in the middle of old diamond mines and rala rock vegetation. The Prefecture until Andaraí are about 9 hours of walking. The city of Andaraí (name meaning River of the bats, indigenous language) is the end point of this beautiful journey.
To return the Sheets it is necessary to follow by car, on the road with an average duration of 2 hours. It’s always good to remember that the crossing of Pati should only be performed with specialized guide. In addition to the ecotourism agencies that usually operate the destination, the climbers can hire local guides directly in the city of Lençóis. And good trail!
