B’twin School: Repairing a Puncture

This week we open the doors of our school for trotters. Today we bring you a mix of operations, some more common than others, but all equally simple.These operations are repairing a puncture, substitute a tire or change the background of rim. It remains with us and discover the simple things that are.

One of the operations we perform more in the workshop of our Decathlon centers is the replacement of cameras. Many of you think that should be quite difficult to click, but in practice it is a fact that occurs very often, even several times on the same route, and may be due to many factors. It usually occurs because some sharp object penetrates our tyre, puncturing our camera, but this can also occur due to an inadequate tire, excessive wear of the pressure, or even because our bottom of RIM is degraded, and responsible for producing the prick is a radio.

The tools that we use for these operations are: some strippers, a screwdriver and a foot pump, hand pump or CO2 cartridge, as well as recommend using gloves. How parts will use a camera (compatible with our wheel), and if it were necessary to fund rim and tyre. We started!!

Step 3. Remove tire. Once we have it deflated, we introduce Remover by the party who has a spoon, in the same manner as if were going to take something from the inside of the tire, we lever, hooking the tire. Once we have it hooked we do more lever and hooked the other end of the Remover to a radio (in the video looks perfectly). Once we have the first Remover in that position, introduce another remover and also make lever, removing one section further tire until we can get the hand and do it manually, pulling the sidewall of the tire out. If what you want is to change the camera, only need to remove one side of the tire, check tread to make sure that there is no element embedded in the tire that can be pinched, and we skip to step 6. However, if we replace the tire must evict the other side of the tire, for it simply we must pull hard and ready. It is very important to not use other tools, such as screwdrivers or spoons. The strippers are designed for this use, no screwdrivers or spoons.

Step 4. RIM Fund. If we take the tire out, we can see if the bottom of tire is damaged. This is one of the key elements to avoid a puncture, and therefore must be in perfect condition, not living it must replace it. For this operation we need a Fund of compatible rim diameter and width with our rim. RIM funds have a hole to insert the valve. Through the hole in the bottom of tire and rim, we introduce a screwdriver to prevent it from moving during the mounting operation. Once done we introduce the background of rim. After entering the bottom of the rim, we make sure that it is perfectly centered, so, raise the rim Fund aided a screwdriver put it so the bottom of tire rest on the screwdriver and will use it as a guide moving the screwdriver across the rim. This is difficult to explain, but it is very easy to view it (from the minute the video 2:23).

Step 7. Closed and swollen. It is time to insert the side that we have tire so it first with the hand, and when we are not able to introduce more air we will help the strippers, this time we will use them for the part opposite to the spoon, this way we get that tire slip by remover and hitch on the rim. There will be times that we have to use several strippers, since depending on the cover, it can complicate a little this operation. Once we have tire inserted in full is the time of swelling. Inflation is possible with hand pump, pump foot or with the cartridge of CO2 (the one in the video). The pressure of inflation will depend on the type of bike, since an MTB with chamber pressure should roam about 2.5 or 3 bar, in a city bike about 5 bar, and one of road between 7 and 8 bar. With these pressures we will avoid, in possible punctures.
